The main reason for transforming this working cattle ranch into a world class Bed and Breakfast was to share the grace and beauty of this Flint Hills ranch with the rest of the world. The first over-night guests were hosted in July of 1993. By early 1999, guests had been registered from 38 states and 21 foreign countries. They include families, professional groups, commercial companies, charitable organizations, and public service employee groups. Notable individuals that have stopped by Clover Cliff Ranch Bed'n Breakfast include astronaut Neil Armstrong, former Kansas Governor Robert Bennett, and John R. Blackshere, grandson of the founders of Clover Cliff Ranch.
It is also told that Frank and Jesse James were invited to sleep in the south corner bedroom (now the music room) of Clover Cliff Ranch when they rode through this part of the country. Their men slept in the hayloft of the big horse barn (since destroyed by fire) on beds of bluestem hay.
In September of 1996, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Maktoum and his entourage rented the bed and breakfast facilities at Clover Cliff Ranch for two weeks. The Sheikh headed the United Arab Emirates' team in the 100-mile World Championship Equine Endurance race hosted in 1996 by the United States in the Flint Hills. Leasing Arabian horses from their American owners, the team used Clover Cliff pastureland for preparing seven horses for the race. The team placed 16th in the 86-horse competition. The Sheikh is the crown prince of Dubai, one of several independent states near the Persian Gulf that make up the UAE.
The Main House was the center of activity on Clover Cliff in the early years, and it remains so today. The first floor rooms are open for all to enjoy, and all guests are welcome to gather in the veranda for an early morning, Flint Hills breakfast.
The Princess Guesthouse, located northeast of the Main House, was sometimes called the golf house because it housed Homer Prather Sr.'s (former owner) golf clubs. Mr. Prather had a private 3-hole golf course on a knoll in the House Pasture. The Gables Guesthouse, located southwest of the Main House, lay vacant for nearly twenty years in the 70's and 80's. The Donahue's hired skilled, local craftsmen to restore it to first class condition. The Cabin Guest House was used as a club house on the ranch. All four structures were updated with modern plumbing, heating, and air conditioning for the convenience and comfort of their guests.
The Miller Ranch House is available on a limited basis. Located on Middle Creek, this 3-story home has been restored. George McNee built this 1890's ranch house while he farmed and ranched. His sister, Mary Miller inherited the home and she passed it down through several generations of the Miller family.
